Skincare routine for the beginners

What products are necessary for the beginner?

For beginners, we recommend starting with a basic three-step routine—cleanse, moisturize, and apply sunscreen. Of course, this can be modified, and products can be added depending on your individual skincare needs. For example, if you’re struggling with acne, you may consider adding a spot treatment. No matter the case, the core three steps remain as the foundation of a successful skincare routine.

One of the first steps on the road to building a skincare routine is determining your skin type. As dermatologists, we classify skin into four main types:

  1. Oily skin: Skin that looks shiny due to an overproduction of oil.
  2. Dry skin: Skin with dry and flaky areas that may feel tight.
  3. Sensitive skin: Skin with red and irritated areas that are typically painful to the touch.
  4. Combination skin: Skin that has a combination of oily and flaky areas.

Let’s get started with the basic skincare routine for you :

  • Step 1: Cleanse

Now that you know what type of skin you have you’re ready to address its needs and find the best cleanser. For oily skin use a gentle face wash that doesn’t contain alcohol, which can dry your skin and cause it to produce more oil. For dry skin try a creamy cleanser that removes dirt but does not strip the skin of its natural oil. For combination skin, we recommend a face wash specially formulated for that skin type. It will hydrate the drier parts of your face but not dry your skin out. For sensitive skin, a gentle cleanser with fewer ingredients and no fragrance is recommended. For normal skin try a gentle cleanser to maintain your skin’s moisture and natural barrier.

  • Step 2: Moisturize

No matter what your skin type you always need to moisturize. It’s a crucial part of your skin looking and feeling good. For oily skin, we recommend a lightweight, non-clogging, oil-free moisturizer. For dry skin try using a thicker cream. For combination skin look for a hydrating, oil-free moisturizer. For sensitive skin, a lightweight cream with fewer ingredients and is fragrance and alcohol-free is your best bet. Normal skin needs a gentle yet light moisturizer to maintain its natural balance.

  • Step 3: Protect

Protecting your skin from further sun (UV) damage allows it to begin looking younger and healthier. With the liberal daily application, you will see fewer signs of ageing and significantly cut your risk of skin cancer.
